Etna Rosso, Calcagno 'Calcaneus'
The Calcagno brothers, Franco and Gianni, represent the most exciting part of the development of the fine wine scene on the north side of the Etna. They’re a sixth-generation Sicilian family with a small cellar in the village of Passopisciaro and own GORGEOUS, old-vine, pre-phelloxeria holdings in the grand cru Contrada of Feudo di Mezzo and Arcuria. In 2006 they bottled their first family production and moved away from selling grapes in bulk. Viniculture is 100% organic and the wines are classics! A blend of 95% Nerello Mascalese with 5% Nerello Cappuccio, natural co-fermentations with ambient yeast and aged in large neutral cask. The increase in ‘wine activity’ in the area has buoyed many local families and the future is very bright at this tiny Domaine. Winemaker Alessandro Bianco recently joined the family after working in the cellars with Andrea Franchetti at Passopisciaro and is taking the wines to new heights.
Bright ruby red. Tasting notes are Intense and complex, notes of red and black fruits, cherries and plums, mineral hints, lava and ground stone elegant and harmonious, fragrant, with a beautiful complexity, with supportive tannic texture.
